Meet Mark Aw AW Pottery CEO
There were several factors that were taken into consideration when setting up my business, cost of properties, demographic & income level, weather, as well as transportation. Carrying over the business from Malaysia, my main goal was to be able to supply potteries to the north east & south east of the US market. A location that is more to the central so our distribution center is not too far distant wise to the far north or the extreme south. Atlanta is an ideal place per my data recollection. Not too far to the farthest big northeastern city like New York nor the southern city like Miami. Property pricing was very affordable when I started 30 years ago. Demographic, income per capita & age group were also very suitable for the business. We need to be in a location where the age group is from 28-70. Income per capita average 45,000 & up. Atlanta is also near the savannah port, so the inland trucking from port to the distribution center will not be too costly. Weather is a very important factor. Our products are mainly for gardening & landscaping. We need more feasible planting seasons for at least 6-9 months. Atlanta is a great city for gardening in comparison to Chicago, New York or Miami.
Dragon kiln 2000 Years Old History
-
Design: The uphill design allows for a natural draft, drawing heat through the kiln as the fire burns from the bottom to the top. This gradient helps achieve extremely high temperatures, ideal for certain types of ceramics.
Firing Process: Firing in a dragon kiln can take several days to weeks. The gradual build-up of heat and the extended cooling period ensure even temperature distribution, crucial for high-quality ceramic ware.
-
Wood: Primarily, these kilns use wood as fuel, which contributes to the unique ash glaze effects on the pottery.
Clay: High-temperature clays are essential, as these need to withstand the intense heat of the dragon kiln.
-
High-Fired Strength: Pottery fired in dragon kilns tends to be more durable due to the high temperatures achieved. This results in denser, less porous ceramics compared to lower-fired methods.
Aesthetic Qualities: The long firing process and wood ash create natural, unpredictable glazes that are highly prized for their rustic beauty that pairs with wood stucco and concrete.
Aw Pottery’s thousand-year-old 280-foot mountain kiln uses natural draft and wood firing to create durable, high-fired pottery with unique ash glazes. Often referred to as dragon kilns, these are incredibly long, tunnel-like structures built into hillsides. Utilizing the natural slope to create a unique firing environment.
